This fourth weekend of Advent reminds us of how God calls us to do amazing and sometimes overwhelming things for life, ours, and others alike. The catch is that there is a choice: we can say no or yes.
Who is Our God?
In our Gospel for this Sunday, we find the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus with this question, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”
Who is Doing the Father’s Will?
Today in Matthew’s Gospel, we hear another parable – ‘the Parable of the Two Sons’ – the second of three consecutive parables about vineyards.
Who do you say that I am?
To put this question from Jesus into perspective, I suggest we start with the second reading for this Sunday. Here we see Paul bursting out in jubilant excitement and exaltation over the wisdom of God.
Are We Little Enough?
The very beginning and the very end of our Gospel today, that being the Gospel Acclamation: “Blessed are you Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom” and the very end of Matthews Gospel: “Whoever has ears ought to hear,” both should leave us wondering if we are little enough and do we hear what Jesus is trying to tell us.
Pentecost Sunday, May 28, 2023
Jesus set forth the establishment of His Church when He told Peter, “You are the rock, upon you I will build my Church” (Matthew 16:18). But the actual birth of the Church took place on Pentecost Sunday with the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.
A Conversation with Jesus
We find Jesus outside the normal trade routes of the time in John’s Gospel, and he is in a place that many Jewish travelers would generally avoid because it was the area inhabited by the Samaritans. Yes, there is fear present due to bigotry and hatred.
Do we desire the Kingdom of God?
This week we are being called to think about what it is and means to be holy. Each of our readings presents a different thought or practice that helps us to understand the concept of holiness.
